Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about tire regrooving — safety, legality, eligibility, and more.

Is tire regrooving legal?

Yes. Regrooving is legal and DOT/CSA compliant for commercial trailer tires that are manufacturer-marked as regroovable. We follow the original manufacturer tread pattern (straight ribs) and maintain a 3mm safety buffer.

Is it safe?

Yes. Our mechanical depth limiter physically prevents cutting deeper than spec, maintaining a minimum 3mm rubber layer above steel belts. Every tire is pre-inspected. Unsafe tires are skipped.

Will regrooving damage the steel belts?

No. We offer a no-belt-touch guarantee. If steel belts are ever nicked during service, we cover the casing value. Our depth limiter makes this virtually impossible.

Can regrooved tires still be retreaded?

Yes, if the casing remains healthy and regrooving was done to spec. The retreader makes the final decision, but regrooving preserves casing value and does not disqualify tires from retreading.

Can you regroove tires that have already been retreaded?

No. We do not regroove retreaded tires because retreading adds a bonding layer between the casing and tread. Regrooving after retreading risks exposing or cutting into that bondline, which can lead to tread separation. However, if you retread regularly, we can regroove before the tire enters the retread cycle—making us your first step. This way, your tires remain compatible with future retreading. Contact us to discuss your retread schedule.

Which tires qualify for regrooving?

53-ft trailer tires with straight-rib patterns, manufacturer-marked as regroovable, with ≤3mm remaining tread, never previously regrooved, and passing our pre-inspection for casing, sidewall, and belt integrity.

How long does regrooving take?

Approximately 20 minutes per trailer (8 tires). No wheel removal means minimal downtime. A 2-trailer pilot takes about 45–60 minutes total.

How much can I save?

At $80 per tire vs. $300–$800 for replacement, savings depend on fleet size. A 20-trailer fleet can save $20,000–$28,000 over six months, depending on utilization and wear rates.

What if a tire doesn't pass pre-inspection?

We skip it and recommend retreading or replacement instead. You only pay for tires we actually service.
